About Ed Crapo
Personal information
Ed Crapo was first elected Alachua County Property Appraiser in 1980 after serving for three years in the Property Appraiser’s Office. He has served as Alachua County Property Appraiser continuously since then. Ed and his wife Sheila live just south of Micanopy on Lake Tuscawilla. Ed has two children, Whitney and Brendan and four grandchildren, Dominick, Kylie, Logan and Ethan.
He graduated High School from Saint Andrews in Boca Raton in 1966 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1970 from Hobart College in Geneva, New York. He moved to Gainesville to attend post graduate studies at the University of Florida.
Ed and Sheila both come from families of five brothers and sisters. They are family oriented and devoted to their children and grandchildren. Beyond family and friends Ed’s interests are reading, cooking, golf, fishing and photography. Ed and his family are big Gator fans and many of his activities revolve around University of Florida events and sports.
Professional Accomplishments
In 1981, when Ed took office, the Alachua County property tax roll had 56,480 real property parcels and 6,428 tangible property parcels for a total taxable value of $1,796,024,191. In the 27 years since then the tax roll has grown to 98,104 real property parcels and 14,208 tangible property parcels for a total taxable value of $12,815,621,528. Ed guided this growth with a stable work force and many technological improvements. The result has been an efficient transition that has successfully met all legal standards for the tax roll every year as well as delivering every tax roll on time. And, Ed has always remained sensitive to the concerns of the taxpayers of Alachua County.
During these years the Property Appraisers Office was one of the very first in the state to make data available on the web. The office was also one of the very first successful local government GIS (Geographic Information Systems) sites. The office is recognized as a leading national GIS success. The office also received the first Sterling Award Team Showcase Award for a governmental agency in North Florida. The office has received many honors under Ed’s leadership; the most prestigious of which is the very first Excellence in Assessment Administration given by the International Association of Assessing Officers. Ed was elected President of the Florida Association of Property Appraisers in 1991, President of the North Florida Chapter of the American Society of Appraisers in 1993, 1994, 2005, 2006 and 2007, President of the International Association of Assessing Officers in 2001 and Governor Lawton Chiles appointed him to the Florida Advisory Council on Intergovernmental Relations from 1991 – 1995. He served as a member of the Board of Regents for the Centre for Advanced Property Economics from 2002 to 2008 and as a member of the North American Appraisal Alliance Task Force in 2001. Ed has also attained and maintained three professional designations, CFA (Certified Florida Appraiser), ASA (American Society of Appraisers) and AAS (Assessment Administration Specialist).
Community Involvement
Ed has been involved in our community since he first moved to Gainesville. He is a long time member of the League of Women Voters, the Alachua County Farm Bureau, Junior Achievement, the Gainesville Area Chamber of Commerce, the Coastal Conservation Association, North Central Florida Builders Association, Gator Boosters, The Arts Association of Alachua County, Gainesville Offshore Fishing Club, the Elks Club and the Gainesville Quarterback Club. He is a graduate of Leadership Gainesville X and a member of the Leadership Gainesville Alumni Association.
Ed currently serves as the president of the Arts Association of Alachua County and is on the Board of Trustees for Junior Achievement. He and Sheila are actively involved in many community events supporting our quality of life and living in Alachua County.
Ed has received many personal honors in his life including; The Alachua County/Gainesville League of Women Voters Elected Official of the Year in 2003, Recognition from the US House of Representatives in 2000, Alachua County Board of County Commissioners proclaiming 10/10/02 Ed Crapo Day, Honorary member of Florida Blue Key, leadership honorary at UF 4/28/95, North Central Florida Builders Good Government Award in 2004, Junior Achievement Bronze Leadership Award in 2004, Alachua County Democratic Party Harry S. Truman Award in 1998, Florida Association of Property Appraisers Herb Lockey Award in 1993 and again in 1999. Ed was instrumental in the creation of the Florida Butterfly Festival and the creation of a golf tournament for Junior Achievement, which they named after Ed, which has raised over $80,000 for the youth of Alachua County.
